Your Adobe Connect Room into a cMOOC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become popular in the last decade.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/04\/education\/edlife\/massive-open-online-courses-are-multiplying-at-a-rapid-pace.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\">In 2012<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, when MOOCs appeared broadly, only 1.2 million students participated in these online courses.\u00a0 \u00a0By the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.class-central.com\/report\/mooc-stats-2016\/\">end of 2016<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, 58 million students participated in 6,850 courses through 700+ universities (and other organizations).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Like I said,\u00a0popular.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Immensely popular.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what exactly are MOOCs?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/library.educause.edu\/topics\/teaching-and-learning\/massive-open-online-course-mooc\">MOOC<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is &#8220;a model for delivering learning content online to any person who wants to take\u00a0a course, with no limit on attendance.&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\"><strong>\u00a0The goal, on the most basic level, is to make academic or expert knowledge available to the masses.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some MOOCs are free.\u00a0 Others cost money, but even if there is a cost, with it open to the masses the\u00a0fee will pale in comparison to standard tuition for similar private courses.\u00a0 Many of the free courses are offered by Universities.\u00a0 These schools justify covering the cost by using the data collected to refine teaching practices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MOOC-Classroom.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11806\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/MOOC-Classroom.png\" alt=\"Adobe Connect cMOOC\" width=\"800\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>MOOCs represent one of the most transformational mediums in\u00a0online learning.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0And it&#8217;s value is incredible.\u00a0 People love the prospect of learning for free or at a discounted price.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, MOOCs have the potential to spread knowledge in a way never possible before in human history, as was noted in a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/quora\/2017\/03\/23\/the-future-of-massively-open-online-courses-moocs\/#652c13f36b83\">Forbes article<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\"><strong>It represents one of the most democratizing developments of the 21st century.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What people don\u2019t realize is that there are two types of MOOC models:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOC<\/span>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOC<\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #225d71;\">And the difference is significant.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOC<\/span>\u00a0vs.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOC<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Why are there two types of MOOCs?<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, as I noted above, the most basic goal of a MOOC is to make expert or academic knowledge available to the average person in the course format.\u00a0 But the initial concept for MOOCs extended beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>As an extension of the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hewlett.org\/strategy\/open-educational-resources\/\">Open Educational Resources<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0movement, MOOCs\u00a0arose not only to provide knowledge but to bring together interested participants.\u00a0 The hope was to create open education in a collaborative environment to encourage communal learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What I just outlined reflects the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.extensionengine.com\/xmooc-vs-cmooc-a-glossary-of-common-mooc-terms-part-2-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOC<\/span>\u00a0model<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 And it\u00a0<em>was<\/em>\u00a0this model that first appeared.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/cMOOC-Definition-FN.png\" alt=\"What is a MOOC? What is a cMOOC?\" width=\"601\" height=\"516\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;c&#8221; stands for &#8220;connectivist.&#8221;\u00a0 Connecting eager and interested learners with experts to collaboratively approach learning topics is the end goal for any cMOOC.\u00a0 The idea is to &#8220;come upon&#8221; knowledge, to reach conclusions that emerge from group discussions.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tonybates.ca\/2014\/10\/13\/comparing-xmoocs-and-cmoocs-philosophy-and-practice\/\">essential characteristics<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>of a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f5c320;\"><strong>cMOOC<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Autonomy of Learner<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Learners select a topic and help define expectations for course structure.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Diversity of Participants\/Tools<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Learners&#8217; understanding of topics will range; the tools used will be various.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Interactivity\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lecture and presentation must be complemented by group interactions and discussion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Open-ness<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Content, access, assessments and conversations are open.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The other type of MOOC is the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOC<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 While the siblings aren&#8217;t complete opposites, they are different.\u00a0 xMOOCs are much more like the lecture\u00a0halls you see in universities.\u00a0 An instructor presents on a topic, and students will engage each other in online forums after the sessions.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Typically,\u00a0it&#8217;s this format in which free courses are offered.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11834\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/xMOOC-Definition-FN.png\" alt=\"What is a MOOC? What is a xMOOC?\" width=\"601\" height=\"516\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are some\u00a0practices and aspects common to\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOCs<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Video Lectures<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lectures are recorded before a session and watched by learners.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Forum Discussions<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Learners interact after the lecture in a forum setting.\u00a0 The\u00a0instructor is not always involved in these forums.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Computerized Testing<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Learners are assessed through tests and quizzes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Most of the MOOCs we see are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOCs<\/span>.<\/strong>\u00a0Most of the larger schools (particularly in the Ivy League) offer xMOOCs.\u00a0 Some businesses, like the World Bank &amp; Khan Academy, also offer free courses through xMOOCs.<\/p>\n<p>The xMOOC model is simply more viable than the cMOOC.\u00a0 It&#8217;s easier to organize courses in xMOOCs,\u00a0 and the costs can be more easily justified or recouped.\u00a0 If nothing else, it&#8217;s easier to ascribe value to a xMOOC, as universities don&#8217;t have to wonder what the result will be.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">xMOOCs<\/span>, though, don\u2019t capture the original spirit of the MOOC.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Their content is predetermined, the discussions are limited and secondary, and the conclusions are defined by the teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 xMOOC instructors are experts in their field, spending their adult lives understanding their subject.\u00a0 So, you know the information is very valuable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The MOOC spirit, though, isn\u2019t just to bring people together to learn. It\u2019s about bringing people together so they can actively learn, collaborate and discuss \u2013 to make the topic more meaningful to the individual participants.<\/strong>\u00a0 And hopefully reach an interesting,\u00a0shared conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This brings up an interesting question:\u00a0Are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOCs<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0possible option to make online learning and training more important to participants?<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\"><span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOCs<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0Rich Learning Medium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>In the 21st century, we&#8217;ve pretty much flipped the model for learning on its head.<\/strong>\u00a0 Instead of focusing on\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/education.cu-portland.edu\/blog\/curriculum-instruction\/what-is-rote-learning\/\">rote learning<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(or the emphasis on the memorization of learning materials), we&#8217;ve come to believe that if learning materials can be made meaningful to learners, they are more likely to retain information.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/special-reports-and-expert-views\/pages\/kay-sargent.aspx\">Meaningful learning<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0has had an\u00a0observed impact on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Productivity<\/li>\n<li>Trust<\/li>\n<li>Information Sharing<\/li>\n<li>External Communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To change learning from rote to meaningful, learners have to be able to engage, interact with, and appreciate the content on a much more intimate level.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>Enter the cMOOC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A cMOOC could be used in conjunction with traditional online learning and training.\u00a0 A virtual space provided for learners to further discuss and debate materials from other lessons with a moderator\/instructor on-hand.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0You&#8217;re giving them the chance to engage each other and the content more deeply.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Happy-Student.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11826\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Happy-Student.jpg\" alt=\"happy cMOOC student\" width=\"500\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine it?\u00a0 Students (or employees) delving deeper into topics, debating with each other.\u00a0 All the while they&#8217;re coming to understand the material better.\u00a0 Glorious!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are a few challenges: The cost and the medium.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s expensive facilitating any MOOC.\u00a0 Then try justifying that expense if you can&#8217;t assure stakeholders what the result will be.<\/p>\n<p>Pair this with the problem that cMOOCs require a very interactive, live, virtual space&#8230;and it may seem untenable.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #f68920;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">We have a solution:\u00a0<\/span>Use an Adobe Connect rooms\u00a0for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOCs.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><em>(Keep reading to learn how!)<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\">Using Adobe Connect Rooms as a cMOOC<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Adobe Connect rooms operate like little\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/eu-nl\/adobe-connect\/learning\/\">virtual classrooms<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 And Adobe Connect offers many tools and features to help users collaborate and converse efficiently.\u00a0 Interactivity is at a premium, while the cost is relatively low.<\/p>\n<p>Adobe Connect rooms all share features across licensing tiers, so you don&#8217;t have to worry if you&#8217;re getting gypped on\u00a0poll, chat, file share or breakout room features. Also, large numbers of people attend even in an average room.<\/p>\n<p>To help you better imagine how it would work, I&#8217;ve outlined some features and strategies that could\u00a0be used to transform your Adobe Connect room into a cMOOC.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">Adobe Connect Room\u00a0Features for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #f5c320;\">cMOOCs<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here are the tools that can help you create a cMOOC in your Adobe Connect room.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Share Pod\/Whiteboard<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Adobe Connect, like all web conferencing platforms, offers screen sharing capabilities.\u00a0 The &#8220;Share Pod&#8221; allows you to do many things.\u00a0 Of course, there&#8217;s sharing your desktop.\u00a0 Files and videos can also be uploaded for sharing.\u00a0 And the pod doubles down on features, including a whiteboard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The best part is that everything you share can be annotated.\u00a0If you&#8217;re screen sharing, all you have to do is click the little &#8220;Pause &amp; Annotate&#8221; button.\u00a0 The image is captured and ready to be marked up!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a document in the pod for everyone to download.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/File-Share.png\" rel=\"attachment Connect Room Strategies for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #fedc51;\">cMOOCs<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Unlimited Webcams<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This functionality is truly unique to Adobe Connect.\u00a0 Most other virtual classroom platforms limit the number of cameras you can have running at any one time.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Adobe Connect offers UNLIMITED webcams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You can have as many webcams running as your bandwidth can support.\u00a0 Allowing participants to use their webcams freely helps to encourage conversation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Adobe Connect rooms come with unlimited Layouts.\u00a0 A layout is just a virtual space that can be custom designed to meet your needs.\u00a0 So, you can create, for
