There&#8217;s on-demand, self-paced, or mLearning. \u00a0Or it could be live training, in\u00a0a virtual classroom or educational webinar.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ready availability of such training opportunities is terrific. \u00a0Workers can learn from their computer or phone anywhere in the world, and enhance their skill base or learn about a new product. \u00a0Can&#8217;t argue with that type of opportunity!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>Alas, all is not perfect in paradise. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0issue has arisen for &#8220;live online training.&#8221; \u00a0All too often online\u00a0trainings\u00a0and educational webinars are used interchangeably. \u00a0That might not seem like a big deal, but it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An online training and educational webinars\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0serve different purposes and audiences. \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/In-a-nutshell-2.png\" alt=\"online training vs. educational webinar\" width=\"400\" height=\"386\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Identifying when you should use a virtual classroom vs. a webinar for instruction can be difficult. \u00a0At MeetingOne, we understand\u00a0this is a challenge. We&#8217;ve\u00a0been at this game a long time.<\/p>\n<p>For years, our\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/eu-nl\/diensten\/ondersteuningspakketten\/\">Customer Support team<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0has trained organizations intending to use virtual rooms for either online event, online training or educational webinar. \u00a0That&#8217;s on top of the frequent webinars we help produce and our own\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/eu-nl\/leren\/webinars\/\"><strong>MeetingOne webinars<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that educate on various topics related to enhancing the online setting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>We&#8217;ll help you better understand the differences between online training and educational webinars. \u00a0As a\u00a0bonus, we&#8217;re going to provide some design tips that will help you build out your virtual rooms to accommodate each type of event best!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\">Online Training vs. Educational Webinar<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>So, what really determines when we should lead an online training vs. educational webinar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are two factors: audience and material. \u00a0Dubbing a session either an &#8220;Online Training&#8221; or &#8220;Webinar&#8221; sets the basis for learners&#8217; expectations. \u00a0Using these terms willy-nilly can get throw an audience off. \u00a0Consequently, the learning material must align to audience size and expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how they play out in the contexts of an online training or an educational webinar.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">Online Training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Training&#8221; itself gives the impression the lesson will be &#8220;hands-on,&#8221; so to speak. \u00a0If you&#8217;re going to call it an &#8220;Online Training&#8221; or suggest &#8220;Training&#8221; will be involved, the learners attending will expect to participate with a smaller, more intimate class with full access to the instructor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Training-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"Adobe Connect Gold Partners - Virtual Training\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/>The environment you want is a virtual classroom. \u00a0Virtual classrooms utilize tools like chats, polls, web cams, white boards, and breakout rooms, among others, to get learners participating and responding to the material. \u00a0These features are ideal for driving interactions and instructing on specific topics.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what online training is all about. \u00a0<strong>Online training in a virtual classroom\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0be used to lead focused discussions on particular topics.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Topics that are pertinent to those participating. \u00a0Topics that learners can apply to their immediate work. \u00a0Topics where their opinion can hold sway in the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you do, don&#8217;t pull people into an &#8220;online training&#8221; and then talk\u00a0at\u00a0them for two hours. \u00a0&#8230;Unless you&#8217;re hoping that participants won&#8217;t retain a bit of what was discussed \ud83d\ude09 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>Online training should be learning focused and get participants engaged in digestible amounts of time<\/strong>\u00a0(30 mins &#8211; 1.5 hours is suggested)<strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">Educational Webinars<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Webinar.&#8221; In today&#8217;s world, everyone knows that a webinar is an online event that will facilitate an informational session for a large audience. \u00a0People know when registering that it will be educational, and they will likely be just listening. \u00a0One other expectation to keep in mind: Time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>Webinars can be held internally or externally. \u00a0Their purpose is to reach a large number of people all at once. People typically expect\u00a0webinars to be around an hour. \u00a0These factors impose the &#8220;restrictions&#8221; on content.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Webinar content should be broad when used externally. \u00a0They can provide basic guidelines for certain practices or thought leadership without being overly instructional. \u00a0Anything &#8220;high level&#8221; should be thought of in webinar terms. \u00a0And it should be lecture oriented with set engagement features like pre-set polls, file shares, and Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.eu\/brain-based-learning-principles-webinars\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10627\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Brain-Based-Learning-02.jpg\" alt=\"Live webinar\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a good example. \u00a0We recently helped put on a webinar called, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.com\/brain-based-learning-principles-webinars\">Brain-Based Principles for Maximum Retention in Virtual Classrooms<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.&#8221; (Go ahead and watch the on-demand webinar.) \u00a0It covers all the bases we just discussed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Broad Topic:<\/strong>\u00a0How neuroplasticity impacts learning retention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Basic Guidelines:\u00a0<\/strong>We offer 6 brain-based principles that are can be used in the virtual classroom setting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High Level:<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;Principles&#8221; is a great cue &#8211; it indicates the topic will be high level.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lecture Orientation:<\/strong>\u00a0While there were some polls, the majority of the webinar was lecture based.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While neuroplasticity may not feel like a simple topic, the way we approached the presentation allowed for the webinar to be &#8220;high level.&#8221; \u00a0Thus, &#8220;educational webinar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Webinars can also be held internally. \u00a0When our organization holds internal webinars, it&#8217;s usually to present on new products or offerings. \u00a0There&#8217;s a general overview followed by group training later on (if needed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>However\u00a0you use them, keep in mind that educational webinars should remain broad and informative. \u00a0The presentation should be a lecture-based and can engage audiences in pre-set ways.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\">Design Differences for Your Online Events<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having built out virtual rooms for online training and educational webinars, we here at MeetingOne have learned a few tricks we&#8217;d like to pass on. \u00a0(Note that we work with Adobe Connect, so our design instruction is based on the customizability of the rooms and the ability to design them before a session. \u00a0Learn more\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/eu-nl\/adobe-connect\/\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">Virtual Classrooms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The virtual environment and hands-on training. \u00a0An impossible pairing, no? \u00a0Not if you incorporate the right design elements and features! \u00a0Potentially, it can even be\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.com\/virtual-face-to-face\">better than face-to-face!<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Virtual classrooms should be designed to engage learners as you might in a physical space. \u00a0So, what does that entail? Minimally, identifying and using the right features.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">#1. Chats &amp; Polls<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Chats and polls are pretty much ubiquitous across virtual classroom platforms. \u00a0And this makes sense. \u00a0They are simple features that drive engagement, and they can be used throughout.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6086 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Chat-Pod-286x300.png\" alt=\"Web Conferencing Accessibility Chat Pod\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A chat can serve a few functions. \u00a0It can either be the discussion board, where learners can throw out questions or comments. \u00a0Or it can be the main vehicle for answering questions if learners don&#8217;t have mics. \u00a0<strong>Either way,\u00a0chats gives people a chance to participate even while others\u00a0are talking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polls are\u00a0great too. \u00a0They get people interacting and thinking. \u00a0They can be used as quizzes, and they help trainers accurately assess knowledge transfer.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s unique about Adobe Connect is that you can run multiple chats or polls at the same time. \u00a0(With most platforms, it&#8217;s an either\/or situation.) \u00a0<strong>Concurrent chats or polls allow your audience to respond to multiple topics or questions in a manageable way. \u00a0This by necessity increases the duration of their engagement and consideration of the topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We would recommend using a continuous chat throughout and add polls frequently. \u00a0Learners attention span\u00a0<span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.com\/hubfs\/Takeaway_documents\/6_Brain_Rules_to_Create_Dynamic_Learning_MeetingOne.pdf\">wanes after 10 minutes<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, so at these intervals, it&#8217;s good to re-engage with a poll or chat.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">#2. Whiteboards<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Whiteboards are ideal for the virtual classroom. \u00a0They provide something closer to a &#8220;hands-on&#8221; feel for online training. \u00a0Not only can you simulate a &#8220;chalkboard,&#8221; you can have groups annotate documents and images in the virtual classroom. \u00a0A solid activity to pair discussions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10866\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/whiteboards-new.png\" alt=\"online training or educational webinar\" width=\"920\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.eu\/pods-elearning-ebook\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10878\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Engage-Learners-with-Pods-eBook-Ad-01-241x300.png\" alt=\"engage learners with interactive Adobe Connect pods\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The above two images are good examples from Adobe Connect. \u00a0The one at left shows a group working to enhance the proposed text for a web page. \u00a0The one at right displays a screenshot Adobe Connect took\u00a0of\u00a0an active web page. Notes can be immediately added to these screenshots.<\/p>\n<h5>(In Adobe Connect, these annotated documents and images can be saved and exported for later review!)<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #225d71;\">Designing a Solid Virtual Room<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\">#1. Multiple layouts<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>All virtual classroom platforms come with a pre-formatted space for you to work with. \u00a0Some are pretty basic and can&#8217;t be modified.<\/p>\n<p>Adobe Connect\u00a0has multiple virtual spaces, called &#8220;layouts,&#8221; built-in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sharing.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Emphasis is placed upon screen sharing and initial lecture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discussion.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0This layout offers a forum for participation. \u00a0Several chats, a poll, and some note\u00a0pods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collaboration.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 To drive interactions, this layout features a whiteboard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10869\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Layouts.png\" alt=\"online training or educational webinar\" width=\"303\" height=\"104\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DIY_Worksheet-Display-300x252.png\" alt=\"Adobe Connect Layouts for Webinar Presentations\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" \/>These three layouts would meet the needs of many online training sessions.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0You can lead your initial presentation in the Sharing layout, turn the discussion over to participants in the Discussion Layout, and then let them interact with materials in Collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re more of a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2025;\" href=\"http:\/\/info.meetingone.com\/hubfs\/Takeaway_documents\/DIY_Layouts-Takeaway_Worksheet.pdf\">DIY trainer<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, you can customize each room with the features you want, and as many layouts as you need. \u00a0The results\u00a0are virtual classrooms suited perfectly to your training needs. \u00a0These tailored rooms can always be templatized in Adobe Connect for organization-wide needs.<\/p>\n<p>(See how we use multiple layouts for educational webinars below.)<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\"><strong>#2. Breakout Rooms<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>When designing an online training, you&#8217;re going to want learners to have the opportunity to discuss and collaborate among themselves.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0What you&#8217;ll want to use are breakout rooms. \u00a0They are perfect for small-groups to work together! \u00a0Small group conversations tend to reflect workplace interactions better, as well.<\/p>\n<p>In Adobe Connect, breakout rooms can be preloaded with content and formatted before the session begins. \u00a0Getting a room situated before a session helps reduce the transition time between the main discussion and group split off. \u00a0Better conversations are the result!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Breakout-rooms-new.png\" alt=\"online training vs. educational webinar\" width=\"920\" height=\"663\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the above example, learners are tasked with devising a solution for this RFP. \u00a0A note section and a chat provide space to propose ideas. \u00a0With microphones on, the learners can also throw their ideas out over the &#8220;airwaves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen good results allotting session time to breakout groups after long lecture sections. \u00a0Once you get into that collaborative phase of your training, you should plan to include breakout rooms.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>To recap:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Regularly use polls and chats keep learners engaged;<\/li>\n<li>Whiteboards are a great\u00a0way to give learners a &#8220;hands-on&#8221; activity;<\/li>\n<li>Use multiple layouts to move through different stages o the training; and<\/li>\n<li>Start breakout sessions to drive group led collaboration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These factors will differentiate your online<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>trainings\u00a0from educational webinars by ensuring your learners&#8217; participation is prioritized<\/strong>. \u00a0We want them feeling as if the information taught so they can apply it immediately to their job. \u00a0That&#8217;s what we could call learning focused.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f68920;\">Webinar Rooms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At MeetingOne, we like a more interactive approach to webinars. \u00a0Yes, educational webinars are first and foremost informational, so lecture is a necessity. \u00a0But a little engagement goes a long way. \u00a0Interactions can increase retention, in turn making your webinar more memorable.<\/p>\n<p>But keep it simple. \u00a0You don&#8217;t need to have the audience to respond to every tidbit shared. \u00a0Poll, chat and Q&amp;A pods are ideal. They provide audiences the opportunity to interact, air thoughts, and voice questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the tricks we&#8217;ve learned over the years is to create a &#8220;Lobby&#8221; in Adobe Connect<\/strong>. \u00a0We outfit the lobby with a Q&amp;A, polls, chats, a countdown timer, and sometimes a fun &#8220;custom pod&#8221; like a word cloud or MP3 music player. \u00a0These features tend to drive early engagement and give us some ideas of what attendees want to get out of the session. \u00a0Here&#8217;s an example of what our lobbies look like:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/New-Lobby-Layout-1.png\" alt=\"webinar lobby layout\" width=\"971\" height=\"670\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, to strike that lecture-engagement balance, we utilize Adobe Connect&#8217;s function to create an unlimited number of layouts. \u00a0<strong>Then, we\u00a0alter layouts to reflect the\u00a0presentation.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0For sections that are information heavy, we&#8217;ll limit the number of interactive pods. \u00a0As you can see below, this layout is designed to focus the audience&#8217;s attention on the PowerPoint presentation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/New-Presentation-Layout-1.png\" alt=\"educational webinar\" width=\"971\" height=\"670\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>We then introduce layouts specifically intended to drive engagement<\/strong>. \u00a0Maybe we want to pause the presentation for a moment and ask a question. \u00a0Well, we design a layout that keeps the slide on the screen while presenting a poll or two. \u00a0Gets the audience thinking and engaged. \u00a0During the presentation, our host will transition to that layout as they wrap up their point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/New-Engagement-Layout.png\" alt=\"educational webinar\" width=\"971\" height=\"670\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, we always finish with a Conclusion Layout. \u00a0It&#8217;s a must for educational webinars. \u00a0It provides a space for sharing the presentation slides and other takeaways. \u00a0And ending on engagement helps to continue the conversation after the event is done.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/New-Conclusion-Layout.png\" alt=\"educational webinar conclusion layout\" width=\"971\" height=\"670\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>You may have noticed the &#8220;Q&amp;A&#8221; and &#8220;Chat&#8221; remained throughout these various layouts. \u00a0We like keeping the Q&amp;A pod available at all times, so participants feel comfortable asking questions. \u00a0As for the &#8220;Chat,&#8221; it&#8217;s a space that allows for attendees to participate without stopping the presentation. \u00a0We feel a little side conversation is not a bad thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just remember:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get the engagement going early with a Lobby;<\/li>\n<li>Move between layouts that are lecture focused or interactive; and<\/li>\n<li>Finish with a Conclusion Layout that offers participants the chance to download relevant documents or explore a\u00a0webpage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #225d71;\"><strong>Building an educational webinar in this way will ensure your lecture is focal when presenting to a large audience. \u00a0But they won&#8217;t feel that you&#8217;re just a talking head. \u00a0It will be a webinar that proves\u00a0<em>educational and memorable<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #bb2025;\">Get it Right Every Time<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/eu-nl\/probeer-het-gratis-uit\/geintegreerde-evaluatie-audioone-adobe-connect\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8114 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.meetingone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Gartner-Best-Webinar-Platform-start-trial-Red.png\" alt=\"best webinar steps best webinar dry run\" width=\"290\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the day, there&#8217;s a big difference between online training and educational webinars. \u00a0Those participating will expect an online training to be more learning focused, built to help them uptake skills or information. \u00a0An educational webinar, on the other hand, can help introduce individuals to new concepts on a high level.
