Web Conferences are all the rage now-a-days. \u00a0As everyone knows, the ultimate benefit of a webcam is connecting face-to-face with anyone, anywhere. \u00a0If you’re like myself, you’re on a web conference at least once a day and are expected to share your face. \u00a0I was tired of looking like a scary monster, so I researched and put together the below 3 easy tricks for lookin’ good on a webcam, anytime, anywhere!<\/p>\n

\nTIP ONE:<\/span> \u00a0 KEEP YOUR WEBCAM LEVEL WITH YOUR EYES OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER.<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Look up, not down! \u00a0Way too many people stare\u00a0directly down\u00a0at their web camera. No one wants to see them nose hairs! \u00a0People don\u2019t look their best in a camera angle that\u2019s coming from beneath their chin. Get that webcam up above your eyes!<\/p>\n

No matter\u00a0how technical you are, most web camera users forget that your eye line\u00a0matters. \u00a0Position your laptop or computer screen on a few books or a stand so\u00a0that you’re looking slightly up at the camera.<\/p>\n

TIP TWO: \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span>USE PLENTY OF LIGHT.<\/span>
\n<\/em><\/h3>\n

Light in the front, NOT in the back\u00a0(think of mullets…Business in the front, Party in the back!).<\/em>\u00a0The light\u00a0should come from in front of you (behind your web camera) or from the side, but not EVER from behind.<\/p>\n

You may want to try putting a lamp on or near your desk so that it lights up your face. Try different ways of lighting yourself, avoiding glare and washout, creating a clear image. \u00a0If you’re lucky enough to be in a room with a window (yay, natural light!), face towards the window so that the light falls on your face.<\/p>\n

\nTIP THREE: \u00a0<\/span> MIND YOUR BACKGROUND.<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019ve done some experimenting with camera height and lightening, you want to create a space that you can always use for your web conferencing sessions.\u00a0It should be quick and easy for you to get your lighting, camera level and angles just right so that you can go into a meeting with very little preparation each time once your “webcam space” is put together!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s in your specific background doesn\u2019t matter all that much, so long as it\u2019s not distracting. You want your viewers to focus on\u00a0you<\/em>, not the messy bed or pile of dishes. If you\u2019re using a laptop, you have a lot of flexibility to take it wherever you want to get the best possible background.<\/p>\n

And don’t forget to\u00a0pay attention to hair and clothing!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>It\u2019s not a beauty pageant, but you\u2019ll still want to take some time before getting on your call \u00a0to check your image and make sure you look decent and professional. Keep the PJ’s\u00a0on your bottom half if you want, but at least put a decent shirt on! \u00a0And women who typically wear makeup should wear makeup even a little brighter than usual, it makes a big difference on how you look on screen.<\/p>\n
